What You Can Expect After Wearing Overnight Ortho-K Contact Lenses

If you’re considering Ortho-K lenses or have recently started treatment, you may be wondering what to expect during the first few days and weeks. While everyone’s experience is different, most patients notice gradual vision improvement as their eyes adapt to the lenses.

This guide walks you through the typical Ortho-K treatment journey, from your first night of wear to the first few months of treatment, so you know what to expect at each stage.

Starting Your Ortho-K Journey

Before starting Ortho-K treatment, your optometrist will perform a comprehensive eye assessment to determine whether the lenses are suitable for your vision needs and eye health. Once prescribed, you will receive customised Ortho-K lenses along with guidance on how to wear, remove, clean, and care for them correctly.

As your eyes adapt to the lenses, it is normal for your vision to improve gradually over several days or weeks. Following your recommended wearing schedule and attending your follow-up appointments will help achieve the best possible results throughout your treatment.

If you’d like to learn more about how Ortho-K works, its benefits, and whether it’s suitable for you, visit our Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) Service page.

It is important to remember that the effects of Ortho-K are temporary. To maintain clear daytime vision, the lenses need to be worn regularly as advised by your optometrist.

Your Initial Ortho-K Consultation

During your initial consultation, the optometrist will explain what to expect from your ortho-K prescription. It is a good time to ask them questions about your prescription and clear up any doubts or concerns you might have before you begin. They will also use this time to measure your cornea’s surface with a corneal topographer and then design custom ortho-K lenses for your eyes. You may need to use temporary ortho-K lenses until you achieve the desired prescription that suits you.

How Long Does It Take to See Results with Ortho-K?

Once you begin wearing ortho-K contacts, their effects will be subtle, and you may not notice them immediately. For the most part, those with low-level myopia (typically less than -2.00D) may start seeing an improvement in vision within three to four days of wearing their ortho-K lenses, but that can still vary from person to person. It will take some time for ortho-K to take effect, so be patient and stay in touch with your optometrist if you have questions or concerns.

The First Few Days

When you wear your ortho-K lenses for the first night, you might feel the lenses on your eyes at first. This feeling will slowly disappear as you become familiar with the lenses. You may notice a subtle vision improvement when you wake up the next day, though it is perfectly normal if your vision seems a little blurry. Depending on your degree of required vision correction, it may take some time, and you may still need eyeglasses or traditional contacts temporarily.

After the first night, you will need to see your optometrist to ensure the lenses fit you correctly and perform as desired. They will help you modify the lenses if necessary.

The First Week

By the first week, you may notice your vision steadily improving over time, though there may still be some fluctuations here and there, including blurriness or halos around lights while you are in low-light environments. You may need to see your optometrist again for a routine check-up and to make further adjustments.

The First Month

By the second to fourth week, your vision should stabilise with regular ortho-K lens wear, and you will no longer need eyeglasses or traditional contacts. You may start to appreciate the effects of ortho-K, especially as you no longer require eyeglasses or traditional contacts to perform daily activities or participate in your hobbies, including sports. You will still need to visit your optometrist for regular checks to ensure everything goes smoothly.

The Third Month

Another follow-up appointment may be helpful to assess your vision’s stability and to make minor adjustments to your ortho-K lenses if necessary. Some people may also find they only need to wear the ortho-K lenses every other night, but your mileage will vary.

Beyond the Third Month

If you wear the ortho-K lenses regularly, you can enjoy excellent vision for a long time; some have even reported having 20/40 vision or better. It can still be valuable to see your optometrist every three to six months (or per their recommendation) to check up on your vision and adjust the lenses based on your current vision needs.

Helpful Tips When Using Your Ortho-K Contact Lenses

First-time wear will not be easy for most people. If you have difficulty acclimatising to the ortho-K lenses, consider these tips to help manage your comfort.

  • Be patient; it takes time to get used to the lenses.
  • Maintain a regular, consistent schedule for wearing them. This can also help you familiarise yourself with the feeling of the lenses on your eyes.
  • To prevent an eye infection, maintain good hygiene when handling the ortho-K lenses. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, and clean your ortho-K lenses and storage case regularly with the recommended cleaning solution.
  • Avoid using tap water to wash your lenses, as they may contain impurities that can adversely affect your eyes.
  • Drink water regularly to maintain your eyes’ lubrication, as dryness can impact your comfort when wearing the lenses. You can also use preservative-free eye drops or dab a warm compress around your eyes to alleviate dryness.
  • Avoid changing your lens-wearing schedule without speaking to your optometrist first. Doing so can alter the efficacy of the ortho-K lenses’ corrective effect on your corneas.
  • Contact your optometrist if you encounter any problems with your ortho-K lens use or are experiencing unexpected vision complications.
